I raised this topic today and thought it makes a substantial topic for a brog entry so I'm bringing it right here.
Before the age of the dinosaurs and for the longest time, I lived life wondering why people do strange things, some to the extent of doing things that make me angry.
Gradually it occurred to me that they do the things they do and I feel the way I feel because there is no common understanding.
I'd like to point out that communication and understanding are 2 separate matters. Yeah surely communication needs to take place before understanding happens. But having communication doesn't mean understanding is sure to follow. Understanding requires empathy which is not required in communication.
Empathy is the one single one one thing that is really rare and I doubt it truly exists. It's a 7 letter word packed with a whole lot of considerations that you can begin to collate and publish as a technical paper. Key points highlighted.. To empathise you need to first - understand the background of someone, 2nd understand his priorities and values. Smaller pieces like habits and emotions follow.
Of course these are difficult information to obtain - Man's mind is a really complex organ. It would be idealistic asking you and me to have all this information at once. If this happens we will turn into homogeneous replicas like in Matrix.
That's why we are - Man.
Or, Woman, if you like.
Nonetheless the minimal we could do is to try to listen.
"I may not agree with you right now but if I don't listen, I will never know. If I never know I will never understand. If I never understand, amiability goes to the dogs."
